"The Centre des monuments nationaux" is a public body controlled by the Ministry of Culture and Communication. It manages, runs and opens to the public more than 100 state-owned national monuments. Among these number some of the country's most prestigious monuments, such as the Abbey of Mont-Saint-Michel, the Château d'Angers and the Château d'Azay-le-Rideau, the castle and ramparts of the walled town of Carcassonne, the Arc de Triomphe and the Sainte-Chapelle, to name but a few. Other monuments illustrate by their diversity France's rich heritage from every period of its history: abbeys, châteaux, prehistoric caves, archaeological sites, and more.
The aim of "the Centre des monuments nationaux" is to focus attention on this heritage, make it accessible to as many people as possible and ensure a high quality of visitor facilities. With nearly 200 events each year, it promotes the participation of national monuments in France's cultural life and in the development of tourism, in collaboration with the regional departments of cultural affairs, the regional authorities and the networks of cultural institutions.
